Words Fitly Spoken

Proverbs 25:11a: A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Standing at the end of an aisle in a local department store I commented how beautiful the silver music box was as a stranger gently placed it back on the shelf. A conversation ignited as I quickly discovered her husband had recently been severely burned and had not been expected to live.

As a believer the past few weeks had been extremely difficult; however, in the midst of the struggle she had witnessed many answered prayers. Her husband not only lived defying all the doctor’s predictions but was slowly progressing! The overwhelming circumstance was still fresh on her heart and after accepting my offer to pray we bowed before the Lord. Tearfully expressing her gratitude she began sharing how I had ‘made her day’ and how she felt it was no accident God allowed our paths to cross.

Just as this precious lady carried a hidden burden I couldn’t help but wonder how many other hurting women carry similar burdens. Each long for prayerful words that seek God on their behalf, words that can help heal emotional wounds, words that can transform an outlook on one’s day, etc. The Bible teaches words fitly spoken are like apples of gold displayed in pictures of silver. Gold & silver are some of the strongest metals in the world; therefore, words fitly spoken can be powerful enough to change the course of one’s life.

How many times do we pass hurting people throughout our day? Do we purposely focus on them? Jesus always welcomed interruptions with sensitivity knowing exactly what to say and how to say it. Wisdom & discernment were His tools.

We need to ask God to sensitize our hearts to hidden burdens & heartaches of others. Words fitly spoken speak to hearts and I promise someone is ready to listen.

Prayer for the Day

Dear Jesus, please allow my words to be your words. Teach me to listen and speak with sensitivity so when words are needed they will be fitly spoken.
